Following dinner, various reports, summarizing the past years events were also given.  Retiring Village Councilman and Fire Board of Trustee, Fred Alspach was also recognized for his many years of service to the Fire District.  The evenings final award was given to Firefighter Tim Polen, who was recognized as the District's Firefighter of the Year.

"Practice Like You Play"

Wellington Firefighters and their guests "braved" the balmy indoor weather the other night to stage a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) drill at the Kelly Street Fire Station.  Fire District personnel meet on the second and fourth Wednesdays for training each month.  Officers from the department, in conjunction with South Lorain County Ambulance District personnel, had been planning the drill for over a month, right down to the last minute detail.

Eleven "victims" were strategically placed throughout the fire station, to simulate a five vehicle accident.  Fire District personnel and Ambulance District personnel, in addition to a crew from Rochester Fire, role played to lend realism to the drill.  As each “apparatus” crew arrived, they were to role play their actions, treating the accident as real.  As the fire and EMS crews arrived, they quickly determined the need for multiple resources from neighboring communities.

The MCI drill was to be used as a learning tool for all responders present.  To make that a reality, evaluators were strategically placed to evaluate certain performance standards, such as use of the Incident Command System, EMS Operations, triage, and most importantly, communications.

Sheffield Village Fire Chief Jeff Young, Columbia Township Fire Chief Ray Anthony, Litchfield Fire Chief Joyce Teodecki, Medical Director Kim Bowen, Med Flight Medic Bill Huffman, and Wellington Chief Bob Walker evaluated all aspects of the operation.  Following the drill, a critique of the crew’s actions took place, directed by the evaluators.

After all was said and done, the drill was conducted successfully, with some of the obvious problems arising, such as communications and resource management, but overall, all participants did very well and the drill was considered a huge success.

2007 Annual Report Available

Calendar year 2007 was like most in recent....busy.  Wellington Firefighters had their share of structure fires, vehicle accidents, and numerous other types of calls.  2007 featured two "career-making", warehouse fires in the downtown area.  Additionally, several notable structure fires were also fought throughout the months.  Fortunately, with the number of structure fires in the response district, no fatalities were encountered.  The Fire District's annual report is now available for download.  The annual report summarizes incidents, training, response times, as well as financial standing and other notable items.
